Use a variety of lifting equipment (e.g., crane, dollies) to move material as required. Measure and mark dimensions and reference points for future machining steps. Calculate dimensions and tolerances and prepare working sketches if necessary. Inspect pieces throughout run to ensure tolerances and quality. Properly use measuring tools. Measure and mark metal and other materials. Set up the conventional or CNC machines for the Operator to run the machine. Fit parts to mechanisms and verify dimensions. Conduct “first-off” inspection as well as in-process inspections. Perform minor problem solving and provide help to another Machinist or Operator. Provide training / support to Operators, Apprentices and other new Machinists as part of their orientation. Conduct daily preventive maintenance checks on machines / equipment, tools and parts. Inspect cutting tools. Maintain a clean work station. Follow all required Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures including WHMIS procedures and the wearing of appropriate personal protective equipment (e.g., safety glasses, steel toed boots). Adhere to quality procedures and work instructions, and actively participate in the quality improvement process; maintain and complete proper Quality documentation and reports.
